Persuasive Writing Extension Pack
High-rigour, high-creativity persuasive writing tasks for high-potential learners.
Persuasive writing can be so much more than forming an opinion and supporting it with reasons. This extension pack challenges students to think more deeply about how arguments work, how ideas can be transformed, how persuasion connects to the wider world, and how effectively their own thinking stands up to scrutiny.
Organised around Depth Education’s Four Thinking Domains, the resource provides a range of challenging, flexible tasks designed specifically for excellent writers and HPGE students.
🔵 Deep Library — Understanding & Craft Analysis
Students explore how persuasive writing works by analysing argument structure, rhetorical devices, tone and evidence. They identify claims, reasoning, evidence and persuasive appeals before applying these techniques in their own writing.
Students then experiment with how changing tone can alter a reader’s trust, engagement and emotional response.
🟠 Idea Forge — Creativity & Transformation
Students are encouraged to experiment with persuasive writing through creative constraints, different formats and unexpected perspectives. They transform simple opinions into speeches, social media posts and formal letters, then explore what happens when traditional persuasive conventions are deliberately challenged.
🟢 Knowledge Garden — Connections & Growth
Students connect persuasive writing to real-world issues, personal values and broader concepts. They explore ethics, community impact, personal experience and future consequences, and use symbolism to give their arguments deeper meaning.
The HPGE extension introduces a Concept Bloom, helping students connect their central idea to psychology, ethics, culture, environment and human behaviour.
🟣 Mind Observatory — Analysis & Evaluation
Students move beyond simply presenting an argument to examining it critically. They acknowledge and respond to counterarguments, investigate the assumptions behind their own thinking, consider who benefits from an argument and explore its ethical implications.
The most challenging task asks students to construct a dual-layer persuasive piece, combining a surface argument with a deeper subtext, followed by a meta-commentary explaining their choices.
Why use this resource?
These tasks are designed to develop the kinds of thinking that high-potential writers need: sophisticated reasoning, rhetorical precision, ethical awareness, structural experimentation, conceptual depth, metacognition and audience awareness.
The activities can be used individually, as extension tasks alongside a persuasive writing unit, for independent work, or as challenges for students who are ready to move beyond conventional writing tasks.
For students who are ready to do more than persuade — they are ready to think deeply about persuasion itself.
Go deeper. Think further. Persuade with intention.
